This week Coinbase, the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the United States, announced that its subsidiary Coinbase Financial Markets has become the country’s first regulated Futures Commission Merchant (FCM) providing American clients access to global crypto-derivatives markets. The initiative was given the go-ahead by the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). According to the company, derivatives account for approximately 80% of global crypto trading volume, including options and perpetual futures.

Challenges for Americans Accessing the Derivatives Market

Previously, American clients found it difficult to gain regulated access to this trillion-dollar market. This led some institutional investors to set up offshore structures to operate in these markets, increasing costs and counterparty risks. Now, Coinbase Financial Markets has become the gateway that allows Americans direct access to products such as options on Deribit with $31 billion open interest in Bitcoin.

Collaboration Between Coinbase and the CFTC

The CFTC has confirmed guidelines allowing some crypto-active perpetuals to be classified as ‘foreign futures.’ A letter from the Market Participants Division (MPD) stated that these contracts can be classified in accordance with Commission Regulation 30.1. The division also will not recommend sanctions against CFM for transferring client assets to foreign brokers for margin trading.

Significance for the Future of the Crypto Industry

This is a significant development for the U.S. crypto industry, as clients can now legally trade derivatives without having to go offshore. Brian Armstrong, CEO of Coinbase, expressed gratitude to the CFTC chair for facilitating sustainable innovations.

How This Will Change the Market

Expanding access to derivatives for American clients is likely to increase market liquidity and attract more institutional capital. It’s anticipated that this could affect overall cryptocurrency pricing dynamics as more players participate in the derivatives markets.

Conclusion

Coinbase’s initiative in collaboration with the CFTC could be revolutionary in providing access to crypto-derivatives for American clients.

  • Strengths: Simplified access and reduced costs.
  • Risks: Potential future regulatory challenges.
  • Opportunities: Attracting a broader range of clients.
  • Threats: Possibility of changes in international legislation.
