What is Stratum V2?

Stratum V2 is an updated version of the communication protocol between pools and individual miners, intended to replace the outdated Stratum V1, which has been in use since 2012. The new protocol offers end-to-end encryption, more efficient farm management, reduced latencies, and allows miners to independently form block templates.

The latter aspect is considered particularly important for network decentralization since the selection of transactions for blocks is mostly controlled by pools. Stratum V2 enables individual miners to form their own blocks, increasing their influence in the network.

The companies Braiins and Spiral, which founded the project in 2022, were joined by AntPool, F2Pool, Foundry USA, SpiderPool, MARA Foundation, DMND, and Block. Collectively, the new group members control at least 75% of the hash rate of the first cryptocurrency network.
